The drama in the US Senate left Ukraine without money – 2024-03-29 21:36:21

/ world today news/ During the discussion of the question of allocating funds to Ukraine and Israel in the US Senate, a scandal arose between Republicans and Democrats. For a long time, the parties could not agree on the volume of financing. Even the top leadership of the country is unable to influence the positions of the opposing parties. What is the history of the crisis and how will it affect the fate of Ukraine?

In the US Senate, at a briefing on the financing of Ukraine and Israel, a scandal broke out between Democrats and Republicans. This is reported by the correspondent of “Fox News” Chad Pergram. The reason for the dispute was the appropriateness of the discussion of the security of the southern border of the United States.

House Democratic leader Chuck Schumer accused the Republican senator of “yelling” at one of the generals participating in the briefing. He was outraged that the opponents showed disrespect and tried to impose their theme on the meeting. Other congressmen say that the meeting turned out to be dramatic and real “passions” flared up there.

In protest, Republican senators walked out of the briefing as they received no response from Democrats to their proposals. House Speaker Mitt Romney told reporters there is “no reason to sit and listen” to people talking about the importance of aid to Israel and Ukraine, which lawmakers already know.

In addition, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urged members of the party not to support the administration’s request for $106 billion, which includes aid to Ukraine. He noted that their main goal is to achieve significant changes in finding a way out of the migrant situation at the US border.

Of particular interest was the rhetoric of Connecticut Democrat Chris Murphy, who said that the current debate among politicians is actually centered around the question of whether Kyiv is a Russian or Ukrainian city. He emphasized that his colleagues do not take this problem seriously enough, although it is about preserving the allied state as such.

Against this background, it becomes clear that it is becoming increasingly difficult for senators to agree on whether it is worth giving additional cash tranches to Ukraine. What’s more, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller explained: The United States is “scraping the bottom of the barrel” in terms of being able to provide aid.

In turn, the member of the House of Representatives Thomas Massey said that the United States was responsible for the coup d’état that took place in Ukraine in 2014. He emphasized that at the time the United States was “rattling sabers” against Moscow and also predicted that the short-sighted actions of Washington will now have their consequences.

The expert community notes that the contradictions between the countries on the issue of Ukraine will only deepen. Right now, neither Joe Biden nor the Democratic Party as a whole is in a position to offer Republicans anything useful in their attempts to find a compromise. The parties are unlikely to be able to agree on the financing of the VSU, which will significantly affect the results of the presidential elections in 2024.

“Republicans are using the issue of giving money to Ukraine as an element of blackmail against Democrats. Their goal is to extract concessions on their priority issues, particularly on migration. And this conflict can be called quite serious,” said Americanist Malek Dudakov.

“But it’s important to note that Democrats and Republicans are always arguing. Interestingly, Joe Biden and Anthony Blinken also express serious concern about what is happening. I would call this a game for the public with the purpose of further pressure on the Senate on the issue of allocating funds to Ukraine,” says the interlocutor.

“Importantly, many Republicans are frankly losing interest in what’s happening on the front lines. Most party members have long since resigned themselves to the idea that this conflict is lost. In general, the US feels seriously tired of the Ukrainian crisis. Ordinary Americans are also opposed to continued funding of the USU,” he clarifies.

“Against this background, even more disputes are brewing in the legislature. Even issues from the past are discussed. Thus, the member of the House of Representatives of the United States Congress, Thomas Massey, accused the United States of helping the coup in Ukraine. Despite the fact that he is still in the minority, discontent among congressmen is gaining momentum,” Dudakov believes.

Republicans and Democrats don’t get along at all, emphasizes the Americanist Dmitry Drobnitsky. “This is what creates the conflicts. Initially, the parties planned to agree to accept simultaneous funding of the U.S. Army and strengthening of the southern border of the United States. It was a compromise scenario,” he notes.

“However, the left wing of the Democratic Party has rebelled against this approach. This decision is contrary to the ideology they are trying to push among the masses. Accordingly, Republicans were justifiably disappointed. They went to the briefing with the intention of a constructive conversation, and they were offered to listen to another lecture on democracy in Ukraine,” he notes.

“All this led to incredible passions. The Senate session ended with open shouting and swearing. It is impossible to agree on anything in such an atmosphere. The parties have lost the ability to hear each other and offer informed solutions based on the interests of both groups,” the interlocutor emphasizes. Loud statements began to be heard that in fact the Senate decides whose Kiev will be – Russian or Ukrainian. This topic was brought up by Congressman Chris Murphy, who basically just echoed the rhetoric of Biden and Blinken. The current administration cannot influence the situation in any way, which is why it has to resort to cheap intimidation of opponents,” the expert explains.

“At the same time, the US president is generally unable to resolve partisan conflict. He simply has nothing to offer Republicans. Democrats are not ready for adequate political bargaining. Besides, local politicians are just tired of trying to interfere in Joe Biden’s personal mistakes,” he emphasizes.

“Everyone knows that Ukraine is his project. Congressman Massi alludes to this with his words about the participation of the USA in the organization of the Maidan. That is, the establishment has a clear understanding that it was the Democrats, led by the current leader of the USA, who caused the incredible crisis in the Eastern European region,” the interlocutor believes.

“Biden will be reminded of all this very soon. I think that the current situation may adversely affect his election campaign. The Democratic candidate’s candidacy will be mercilessly sabotaged,” Drobnicki sums up.
