the difficult data collection

In this context, several works allow us to see more clearly. Analysis of the two French registers of childhood handicaps, which cover the departments of Haute-Garonne (RHE31), Isère, Savoie and Haute-Savoie (RHEOP) confirms, for France, the international trend: an increase in diagnoses of ASD in children aged 8, with more precise diagnoses. In detail, “from the generation of children born in 1995–97 to that of 2007–09, the prevalence of ASD increased from 2.3 to 7.7 per 1,000 and from 3.3 to 5.6 per 1 000 for RHE31 and RHEOP respectively ”. At the same time, there has been a “significant decrease in the proportion of children with developmental delays associated with ASD diagnoses”.

Still many unknowns

Despite this, the great diversity of ASD partly explains the difficulty in having reliable data. Especially since “many questions remain as to the causes and mechanisms of development of these disorders”, continues Claire Compagnon. As a result, “in France, many people with ASD are currently not identified”. In addition, “due to the weaknesses of the data collection systems, it is not possible to know precisely the number of autistic people benefiting from support in the various sectors, health, medico-social, or city care , for those, the most numerous, who live at their home ”, she concludes. Still significant efforts will therefore be necessary to respond to this major public health issue.
