The Delta Variant of COVID-19, US Citizens Must Wear Masks Again!

Jakarta

The mandatory mask rule is re-applied, United States citizens who have received two doses COVID-19 vaccine now have to wear face mask in public places, especially indoors. The urge to return to the mandatory wearing of masks emerged after the Delta variant of COVID-19 spread rapidly.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also encourages all students and teachers in kindergarten to high school to wear masks even if they have received a full dose of vaccinations. The CDC says children should get back to learning with the right COVID-19 prevention strategies.

Quoted from Channel News Asia, The policy of removing masks was previously carried out by the US in May when COVID-19 cases decreased dramatically. At that time, the CDC issued guidelines for being free of masks indoors, for those who had been vaccinated against the second dose of COVID-19, so that activities began to return to normal.

Unfortunately, the US is now reporting a sharp daily increase in COVID-19 cases, reaching 57,126 cases, about a quarter of the pandemic’s previous peak.

“In areas with substantial and high transmission, the CDC recommends that fully vaccinated individuals wear masks in indoor public areas to help prevent the spread of Delta and protect others,” the CDC said.

According to the CDC, 63 percent of US states have recorded high transmission rates. Therefore, it is important to re-oblige citizens to wear masks to prevent the Delta variant.

Dr David Doudy, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University, said the CDC guidelines were motivated by changing patterns of infection.

“We see this doubling in the number of cases every 10 days or so,” he said.

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten praised the CDC’s new guidelines on masks. “It is necessary to deal with changing reality or the characteristics of faster transmission of the virus,” he said.

“Precautions are needed until children under 12 can receive the COVID vaccine and more Americans over 12 get vaccinated.”

The new CDC recommendations are non-binding and many Americans, especially in Republican-leaning states, may choose not to follow them. There are at least eight regions that prohibit schools from requiring masks.

Dr Isaac Weisfuse, a medical epidemiologist and professor at Cornell University Public Health, said resistance was possible among some people.

“I think we’re going to get hit back because I think people might see it as a setback,” he said.

On Monday, the Biden administration confirmed it would not lift existing international travel restrictions, citing the rising number of COVID-19 cases and hopes that they will continue to rise in the next few weeks.
