The Debate Entry: Why People Don’t Trust Buses Anymore

The debate entry expresses the writer’s opinions.

(Fredrikstad Magazine): Over a week ago burned eight gas buses, and all the gas buses were parked. Just in case? Do not know.

Very little is said about why, and very little about the development of the case. There is no limit to how many weird speculations one can have when the facts are not there.

The result is that people do not take the bus, and slowly but surely establish other transport habits.

Schoolchildren brag about their transport problems to get time off, I have no idea what working people do without a car. Everyone is slowly but surely learning that the bus is not the solution to their transport needs. It is enough with which is the solution – admittedly expensive, but flexible, private, comfortable and time-efficient.

The problem is that the car needs a lot of space. A century ago it swallowed a row of houses along Rolvsøyveien, and it is about to swallow more. The car must be parked, preferably right at the entrance to the store you are going to, and large areas are set aside for street parking, in addition to car parks and caves in the mountains. It doesn’t help if the car is electric. The space it uses is the same.

The areas that the car takes up are difficult to use for anything other than a car. We don’t get in the way, because it’s dangerous there, and motorists will get angry and honk and threaten with fists, pointing at the head and the like.

I don’t think it’s pleasant to sit down in a car park either, it’s empty at best, otherwise there’s a sea of cars there. Should I occupy the last place by sitting there, I would be met with the previously mentioned gestures of a frustrated motorist who wants to get out of his pile of steel.

Walking along a busy road is also unpleasant – noise, exhaust, splashes of mud. And then it is not very reassuring to have these piles of steel of one ton and upwards at speed right next to you. The driver is obviously on an important phone call. It still doesn’t help that the car is electric.

So while it is too dangerous to put the buses on the road, we learn once again that the bus cannot be trusted.

It doesn’t matter that the bus in lower Glomma is quite cheap (because it is). When it doesn’t work for safety’s sake, we drive. Huge areas have already been set aside for the car.

Don’t teach us habits that require even more space for the cars. Don’t let safety be the thing that suffocates our city.
