The Death of Robbie Robertson: A Loss Felt Worldwide

The Angels. The death of Canadian musician and The Band co-founder Robbie Robertson has caused grief and deep sadness around the world. “The music of The Band and Robbie’s own later solo music seemed to come from the deepest heart of this continent – from its traditions, tragedies and joys,” said director Martin Scorsese (“Taxi Driver”) in a personal letter of condolence to several media outlets present. Robertson was one of his closest friends and a constant in his life.

They recently worked together on the soundtrack for Scorsese’s new film Killers of the Flower Moon, according to a statement from Robertson’s manager Jared Levine. According to the announcement, the musician died on Wednesday in Los Angeles at the age of 80 after a long illness surrounded by his family.

The son of a Mohican woman had learned to play the guitar as a youth on the Six Nations reservation. The Band rose to fame as the backing group for Bob Dylan in the ’60s and later released albums of their own. These include “Music From Big Pink” (1968) and “The Last Waltz” (1978). The band mixed blues with rock, folk and country. Songs like “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and “Up on Cripple Creek” were among their hits. Robertson was a giant and his influence on music was profound and enduring, Scorsese wrote.

Two years later, the director documented the group’s legendary final concert in San Francisco in 1976 in his concert film “The Last Waltz”. Robertson has worked on numerous projects by the filmmaker, including Raging Bull, Shutter Island and The Irishman. In 2019, the documentary “Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band” about the life and work of the musician premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted a tribute to the deceased’s work: “Robbie Robertson was a big part of Canada’s pre-eminent contributions to the arts. Thinking of his family, friends and fans who mourn his loss. Thanks for the music and the memories Robbie.”
