In fact, it is reported that the risk of death from the virus is almost 88 percent.

According to WHO information, the Marburg virus belongs to the same family as the Ebola virus.

Allegedly, the virus first caused outbreaks in 1967 in Marburg and Frankfurt in Germany, and in Belgrade, Serbia.

The outbreak is linked to laboratory work using African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) imported from Uganda.

Transmission of the Marburg virus to humans can occur due to prolonged contact with mines or caves inhabited by Rousettus bat colonies.

Once a person is infected with the virus, Marburg can be spread by human-to-human transmission through direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other body fluids of an infected person, and with surfaces and materials.

Symptoms of Marburg virus infection include high fever, severe headache and severe malaise.

Those who are infected may also experience chronic diarrhea, stomach and cramping, nausea and vomiting can begin on the third day after infection.

Diarrhea can last for a week. In this phase, the patient’s eyes look sunken, face expressionless, and experience extreme lethargy.

In addition, patients may develop a rash without itching on the second and seventh days after the onset of symptoms.

Many patients develop severe symptoms after seven days of infection. Bleeding can occur in the nose, gsi, and vaginal area.

During the severe phase of the disease, the patient develops a high fever.

The virus also affects the central nervous system causing confusion, irritability and aggression.

In the final phase, which is day 15 after infection, the patient may also develop orchitis or testicular inflammation.

In fatal cases, death usually occurs between the eighth and nine days after the onset or onset of the disease, usually preceded by severe blood loss and shock.

There is no proven treatment available for Marburg virus infection.

However, various potential treatments including blood products, immune therapy and drug therapy are currently being evaluated.

To maintain the viability of those infected, treatment can be done through rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids and treatment of specific symptoms.

It is difficult to clinically differentiate Marburg virus disease (MVD) from other infectious diseases such as malaria, typhoid fever, shigellosis, meningitis and other viral hemorrhagic fevers.

However, detection of Marburg virus infection can be done with a series of tests such as the following:

  • antibody related enzyme immunosorbent assay (ELISA);
  • antigen detection test;
  • serum neutralization test;
  • reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay; and
  • virus isolation by cell culture.
