The Deadly Impact of Missed Flu Vaccinations During the Coronavirus Pandemic

It’s not for nothing that doctors define influenza as an insidious disease.

This season, the flu has run rampant because vaccinations were missed during the coronavirus pandemic.

After the flu, complications can be so serious that they lead to death. Infectious disease specialist, immunologist-allergist Georgy Vikulov told correspondents of Komsomolskaya Pravda radio about such cases.

For example, influenza causes pneumonia, and if a bacterial infection occurs, viral-bacterial pneumonia occurs. This dangerous disease sometimes leads to the death of a person.

Vikulov named damage to the brain, vision, and other organs among complications after the flu. Influenza viruses can also affect the circulatory system – then thromboses form, which is also deadly.

The death of the patient can result in severe damage to the respiratory system; viruses interfere with the diffusion of oxygen from the air, as a result the person simply suffocates, sometimes with pulmonary edema.

Such cases occur in people without any previous immune system disorders. Influenza is dangerous for athletes during periods of intense exercise – their immunity is weakened at this time.

Of course, all people with weakened immunity for any other reason are at risk.
