The documentary film (not a documentary) uses the example of a family (1880-1980) to show the disappearance of Hamburg’s gangways in particular and the old town in general. The three corridor quarters were part of the old town and were counted among Europe’s largest slums. It reports on the need to rehabilitate neglected residential areas and what that means for the affected residents and the city itself. Critically and without social romanticism, he illuminates ruthless urban planning in a century of turmoil and catastrophes.
The unstable main character Walter Wedstedt leads through this film as a first-person narrator and tries to approach an old city that no longer exists. Walter Wedstedt was the filmmaker’s grandfather.
Information should be given about the circumstances under which Hamburg’s old town was removed and who benefited from it and who didn’t. The aim is also to realize a film with an epic-documentary structure, which also includes a dramaturgical plot, in order not only to call up the topic of the city as a living space, yesterday/today, in an academic context, but also to find a broader audience for it.
