The Dangers of Consuming Viagra: Man Goes Blind After Excessive Consumption

Bandung – Excessive consumption of Viagra or what is often called the blue pill, caused a man in Iran to experience blindness. This case was published in the Journal of Medical Case Reports.

Quoted from detikHealth, it all started when this 32 year old man in Iran consumed large amounts of sildenafil, which is the main ingredient in the blue pill. He suddenly lost vision in his right eye after that.

Despite efforts to restore his sight, doctors said the damage was too severe and he has now lost all vision in his eyes.

In the journal, medical officials from Tehran, Iran, said this was the strongest evidence that taking the drug sildenafil could harm the eyes. Sildenafil is a drug used to treat impotence. This drug works by increasing blood flow to the penis through relaxing the blood vessels.

Under certain conditions, the effects of this drug can accidentally harm other sensitive blood vessels in the body, one of which is the blood vessels in the eyes.

The man suddenly lost his vision three hours after taking 100 mg of sildenafil. This is the maximum dose of the drug and is twice that recommended for most men taking it for erectile dysfunction.

After losing the ability to see, the man went to the hospital and told medics that he was taking sildenafil. Scans showed the man, who had no other medical complaints, had clots in the arteries and veins that supply blood to and from his right eye.

This resulted in swelling of his retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the organ. Apart from that, he also experienced macular edema, a condition where blood leaks into the retina.

Doctors at Farabi Eye Hospital said the pressure from this fluid buildup eventually caused the retina to physically detach from the rest of the eye.

Although medical officials say eye and vision problems have been reported due to the use of sildenafil, the relationship between the two is still controversial.

“Several serious retinal vascular accidents have been reported after use of sildenafil but the exact role of this drug is unclear,” they wrote, quoted from the journal.

“Because the patient was healthy with no known risk factors for vascular disease… and in addition to the close temporal relationship between sildenafil intake and disease occurrence, we speculate that the drug may play a causal role in this clinical scenario,” they continued.
