The Czechia is the scrap yard of Europe again? Few new cars are sold, they are ruled by “wrecks” from imports

These are definitely not numbers like before the covid, but again, it’s not such a horror – sales of new passenger cars grew slightly last year. But what’s worse: fears are being met that the Czech market will be flooded with used cars from abroad.

Last year, carmakers in the Czech Republic sold 206,876 passenger cars, which is 1.9% more than in 2020, but also 17.2% less than before the covid in 2019. This follows from statistics published by the Association of Car Importers on Thursday ( SDA).

The number of registrations of new hybrids and plug-in hybrids has grown significantly. Contrary to expectations, however, registrations of fully electric vehicles did not increase; on the contrary, there was a decrease of 19%.

The association also warned of the consequences of other statistics – imports of used cars last year rose by a significant 23% to 185,663 cars, the most since 2008! “The reason for the growth in imports of used cars is the lack of new cars, which customers more often replaced second-hand cars,” explained SDA Secretary Josef Pokorný.

Skoda and Volkswagen were imported the most. The average age of imported used cars is 10.4 years, while cars older than ten years are slightly over half. According to the import union, the share of imported cars over the age of 15, which last year was over 21% last year, is alarming.

Experts, dealers and car manufacturers warn of flooding the market with old used cars. Older cars often no longer meet current safety requirements, and there is a growing risk of hidden accidents and other problems.

In addition, the continuing growth in the share of old cars on Czech roads may be a much bigger environmental problem than the fact that conservative Czechs are reluctant to buy electric cars.

“One of the most environmentally friendly cars in the Czech Republic is being produced in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but there are an average of 15-year-old cars on our roads. I’m afraid it could get worse. the car and people trade will continue to run with their petrol and diesel cars, the age of which will only increase, “says Martin Peleška, head of Toyota’s Czech representation in the Czech Republic.

Some experts in the automotive environment are calling for support from the state, which would allow people to buy on better terms, still used but younger cars, ie with some financial support to exchange their old twelve and fifteen-year “wrecks” for ten-year or five-year-old cars. . They have a similar long-term program in Romania, for example, where the average age of cars has fallen sharply over the last five years.

Sales of new cars last year significantly slowed down production downtime caused by missing chips. The youngest annual or two-year used cars quickly began to disappear from the market, and the excess of demand over supply also screwed up used car prices.

The best-selling among the new cars last year was the Škoda Fabia, the second Octavia and the third Kamiq.
