A book by Pierre Benoit has forever marked the publishing world: it is the very first paperback book, a small revolution. Today, for authors, going out in their pocket is a must. The lifespan of a large format book is about a year, before leaving its place in the pocket format.
It all started with Henri Filipacchi, general secretary of the Hachette group. He imagines a book that is cheaper to make and more accessible to everyone. Production is faster thanks to rotary printing. Result: the pocket can sell for only two francs, less expensive than a magazine. Its small size allows it to be taken anywhere. And its dimensions were not chosen by chance: they are exactly those of the revolver pocket of the combat uniforms of American soldiers.
