The Covid-19 Death Rate in Brazil Reaches 450 Thousand Cases

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The victim died Covid-19 Brazil surpassed 450 thousand cases on Tuesday (25/5). One of them is said to have occurred due to a delay in launching vaccinations in that country. Epidemiologists have also warned that a brutal new wave of COVID-19 could come again.

Citing AFP, Brazil’s health ministry reported 2,173 deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the official number of deaths from the coronavirus in Brazil to 452,031. The current situation is said to be quite stable with an average death rate from Covid reaching 1,854 per day during the past week. Their number fell by more than 3 thousand in mid-April.

But the number of infections has steadily increased since early May, to an average of 66,000 per day over the past week, making epidemiologists worry that the death toll will start to rise again as well.

With 215 deaths from Covid-19 per 100,000 population, Brazil is the worst-affected country in America. Brazil is also the worst affected country in the world.

Experts say the latest increase in infections is partly due to state and local governments lifting pandemic restrictions a month ago when the curve showed a slight decline.

In addition, the slow rate of vaccination has also exacerbated it. About 20 percent of Brazil’s 212 million people have received their first dose of vaccine, and 9.9 percent per second. The amount is still too little to inhibit infection.

The World Health Organization has identified mutations as “attention variants”, as they appeared in Brazil. Both are feared to be more dangerous than the original type.

The Indian variant has not yet been confirmed to spread locally in Brazil.

But “I think it’s only a matter of time,” said researcher Margareth Dalcolmo, of the leading public health institute Fiocruz.

The Indian variant is very difficult to handle, he told CNN.

The Brazilian Senate has opened an investigation into why the country’s Covid-19 death toll is so high. They highlighted far-right President Jair Bolsonaro’s pandemic response to controversy.

Bolsonaro has controversially opposed staying at home, refusing face masks, refusing offers of vaccines and touting ineffective treatments such as the use of chloroquine.
