The corona pandemic has also had Salzburg firmly under control since last spring. And the number of those who urgently need help has risen significantly, observes the director of Caritas Salzburg, Johannes Dines: “In 2020 we carried out an average of 62 consultations a day. In comparison, there were an average of 48 in 2019. Around 30 percent more people asked for help because they simply didn’t know what to do next. “
Short-time work or even job loss – that apparently tears a huge hole in the finances of many. 5000 food parcels have already been distributed to people who can no longer afford their daily shopping. Repairs that suddenly become necessary – for a washing machine, for example – put many in financial difficulties, according to Dines.
It is noticeable that people are now coming to consultations who previously never thought they needed help, says Dines: “Because they earned well, had a job. They thought they were safe, but then suddenly slipped into the crisis. ”He therefore appeals to the people of Salzburg to be willing to donate. Because an end to the trend is currently not in sight, adds Caritas Director Dines.
