The City of Marseille announces a new list of schools soon to be renovated

“You were told a very big plan, that’s what you see unfolding before your eyes.” This Tuesday, Benoît Payan lifted a new corner of the veil on the school renovation plan. With 54 establishments (kindergarten or elementary) announced* for work in 2023 or 2024, the number is approaching the 188 planned in total, for delivery no later than 2031. The dedicated public company, now the official holder of a partnership, will start studies on seventeen projects, with the launch of the works expected in 2024. Twelve of them are new compared to the first wave communicated in October 2021.

“You see that we are in priority neighborhoods, mostly affected by ANRU projects, which need strong attention from the municipality and had not had it until now”, defended the mayor of Marseille, in response to a question about the prioritization of projects. This announcement was also part of a new project presentation: after the Malpassé-Les Oliviers school in January, the elected officials visited the Émile-Vayssière 1 school, in the heart of the large Mail co-ownership in the 14th arrondissement. These school groups are part of the six projects launched this year, including five called GEEP, identified as concentrating the problems. Four other projects will continue in 2023 (Marceau, Capelette, Cité scolaire internationale and Les Fabriques) and two will be delivered during the year (Saint-Louis-gare and Abeilles).

Conversely, twelve projects listed in October 2021 for studies to be launched no longer appear in the 2023/2024 programme. “The prioritization of construction sites was refined during the constitution of the public company according to the demographic evolution, the building context and the feasibility of the projects”, explains the City, for whom this does not mean a lack of future work. These include four GEEP schools (Étienne-Milan and Azoulay in the 8th, Rosière-Figone in the 12th, Saint-Louis Le Rove in the 15th).

* A project can concern one or two establishments (kindergarten and elementary). The 54 establishments are therefore divided into 29 projects detailed below.
