The dark side of the moon.
When the Chinese rover Yutu-2 discovered a strange greenish gel-like substance in a crater on the opposite side of the moon, there was understandable excitement. Shocked scientists are now trying to figure out what it is.
What is that? Who created this greenish slime? Were they aliens? Or is it space snot or molten rock?
A Chinese rover found a mysterious greenish slime on the moon
The Yutu-2 probe is behind this strange discovery. It is part of the Chinese Lunar Mission Chang’e 4, which aims to explore the mysterious opposite side of the Moon. When this unique discovery was discovered, shocked scientists began to work out what it was really about.
Scientists have described the substance as “dark green and shiny”. The measured width was approximately 52 centimeters.
The discovery of the greenish slime was still quite extraordinary. The reason is mainly the place where the slime was found. The opposite side of the moon is complicated in itself, as it is very difficult to maintain contact with ground control on Earth. The moon looks like a huge rock here.

But the maneuver gave scientists plenty of data to work with to understand what it was all about. Eventually, they seem to have concluded that molten rock is the most likely explanation.

A team led by scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences then published an analysis of the substance in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters.
It is a rock, more precisely “molten impact breccia”. A breach is a rock made up of fragments of rocks or minerals glued together, like a geological version of a jelly salad with pieces of fruit. It will melt and may become glassy.
“It was formed from the impact welding, cementation and agglutination of lunar regolith and breccia,” the team said.
The probable suspect is the impact of a meteorite. “The glasses in lunar regolith usually come from impact melt or volcanic eruptions,” the study says.

The study also found that the molten rock resembles molten lunar impact breccia samples returned from NASA’s Apollo moon missions.
It seems that one of the hypotheses and the big questions surrounding the “gel-like” substance can thus be answered. They weren’t extraterrestrials, yet it appears that further investigation is needed for the answer to this mystery to be truly satisfactory.
