The Central Bank of China will destroy paper money from the areas affected by the coronavirus

The branch of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) in Guangzhou (Guangzhou) has ordered the return of paper money that was in circulation in hospitals, animal markets and buses in areas affected by the coronavirus to destroy potentially contaminated bills and ensure safety of cash transactions, reports The South China Morning Post.

The commercial banks of the province has received the order of separate tickets from these areas, disinfect them and deliver them to the PBOC.

According to Bloomberg, the paper money of the most affected areas will be quarantined for at least two weeks, while in the less affected regions the measure will last seven days.

During the quarantine, the money will be submitted to a disinfection process that will include the use of ultraviolet light.

“The money from the key areas affected by the virus will be disinfected with ultraviolet rays or heated and stored for at least 14 days before being distributed again,” said PBOC Deputy Governor Fan Yifei.

Avoid interruptions in the supply of cash

The order comes after Fan Yifei announced last Saturday that 600 billion yuan ($ 85.6 billion) of new bills had been distributed throughout the country since January 17, including 4 billion yuan ($ 572 million). ) sent to Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, to avoid any interruption in the supply of cash.

About 7,800 million yuan (1,100 million dollars) withdrew from circulation in the province of Guangzhou between February 3 and 13, while another 3,000 million yuan ($ 429 million) were issued.
