The Case of José Luis Palomino: Accidental and Involuntary Contamination

The latest case similar to Pogba’s in Serie A concerns José Luis Palomino, later acquitted by the National Anti-Doping Tribunal after having lost four months (13 matches) waiting for the sentence, also missing the World Cup. The Argentine defender of Atalanta was found positive for Clostebol Metabolita, an anabolic steroid contained in healing ointments or sprays, on 26 July, following a surprise check which took place in Zingonia on the 5th of the same month. Immediately suspended, Palomino had requested counter-analysis (new positivity on 12 August) and, with the full support of Atalanta, had reiterated the thesis of accidental and involuntary hiring, refusing the plea bargain in the face of the request from the anti-doping prosecutor’s office for 2 years of disqualification. At that point it is inevitable to go to trial.

In the hearing on November 5 at the National Anti-Doping Tribunal, Palomino reiterates his innocence: the contamination was accidental, the fault of an ointment. Two days later, the acquittal because the taking of Clostebol had been “accidental and involuntary”. Even if last month Nado Italia (the structure responsible for anti-doping controls) lodged an appeal with the CAS of Lausanne.
