Bilbao has said goodbye to Carnival this afternoon with the traditional burial and burning of the Sardine after five days full of celebrations. This popular ritual has once again attracted a large audience that has mourned the farewell to the well-known carnival icon.
As reported by the Bilbao City Council, the curious and emotional celebration has once again brought together young and old in the Plaza Nueva to go to the emblematic Teatro Arriaga. Once there, neighbors and neighbors have been able to enjoy and live the theatrical spectacle that always accompanies this important date: the burning of the Sardine.
The show has been carried out by some pirates who have arrived at Ra de Bilbao to fill their ship with fuel and continue their journey, but given the price of fuel and its scarcity, they have chosen to burn the Sardine and use its fat as fuel. This has been the last ritual of the Bilbao Carnival this year 2023.
The Councilor for Cooperation, Coexistence and Festivals of the Bilbao City Council, Itziar Urtasun, the funeral procession of the Sardine and the Mixed Festival Commission, in addition to all the people present, who did not want to miss out, participated in the event carrying candles. this final act with which the City Council puts an end to the Carnival of Bilbao.
