On the beaches of the Atlantic, it is not uncommon to have water at 16°, even in summer. This is enough to discourage some who prefer to soak only their feet…

Not Lorraine Green-Godwin, a resident of Batz-sur-Mer (Loire-Atlantique). Cold water, she likes that, but that supposes some precautions.

At 6°, she bathes

She practices sea bathing all year round, even when the water drops below 10°. This is what she calls “wild swimming” or “wild swimming”.

The lowest ? 6° in winter. But when the air is at 8°, there is little difference. Anyway, we don’t start swimming in the middle of winter… We gradually lower the temperature and you have to come there every day.

This Franco-British moved to France in 2004 and to Batz, where her family lives, since 2009.

A choice she savors every day.

“It’s vital for me to swim”

Coming for a swim is vital for me. Every day, when possible and depending on my job. And especially if the weather conditions and the state of the sea allow it. If there’s a storm, we don’t go there. This is the first thing to look at before swimming.

And on this Tuesday, August 22, the water is between 18 and 19°. And the air is already well above 26°.

Hence his second piece of advice: do not “roast” before getting in the water. A basic rule, certainly, but which, if followed, facilitates entry into the “bath”.

Cold water: 1 minute per degree

You have to respect nature. The cold, you have to know how to accept it to benefit from it. When it’s winter, you have to come dressed warmly and after the bath, which shouldn’t exceed 1 minute per degree, you dry off and get dressed quickly, with several layers. We warm up naturally. My friends bring thermos and hot water bottle…

La Batzienne has long participated in the Frosted Ducks in La Baule. Sometimes with fanciful disguises.

Like this warm “purple cat” pajama jumpsuit that is not uncommon to see on the boulevard de mer in winter…

The hot shower will wait a few hours, otherwise it will “dilate” the blood vessels.

Warn those around you

Another instruction, especially for solo swimmers: choose a safe beach, “so as not to put anyone in danger to come and rescue me. And I have to be able to get out of the water easily in case of cramps or dizziness. I always text when I get back to my swim buddies when they’re not coming. They know where I am, ”adds Lorraine to L’Echo de la presqu’île.

The Manérick and Dervin beaches at high tide are among his favorites.

In addition to the problems of strong current on certain beaches, such as La Govelle, encounters with stinging species can occur:

Some like physalia can cause severe allergic reactions. The tentacles can measure up to 40 meters! I found one, brought back to the top of the slope, Dervin beach.

Multiple benefits

For the Batzienne, the benefits of sea bathing are multiple, even in fresh water, if you are not suffering from cardiovascular pathologies: they boost the immune defenses and are sometimes prescribed by doctors to supplement treatments (such as asthma). And it gives fishing.

I don’t have the same energy when I’m not swimming. And what pride when you get out of the water! These swims have become a drug. I became addicted.
