A photo of the Capitol to illustrate the Capitol in Washington, it is the blunder of CNews noted by Internet users Saturday, January 16, 2021. (© Twitter screenshot)
The Toulouse Capitol is majestic, we knew it. But he is so majestic that he can easily match with the Washington Capitol, one of the most prestigious buildings in the United States.
This is undoubtedly the main lesson to be learned from the blunder of our colleagues in CNews, Saturday January 16, 2021.
The Capitol of Toulouse replaces that of Washington
By wanting to illustrate a serious subject, that of the arrest of a heavily armed man near the Capitol in Washington, a few days before the inauguration of the new president Joe Biden, CNews was, in fact, mistaken and chose a very beautiful photo of the Capitol… of Toulouse.
This mistake (a Capitol blunder, we could say) has put one of the most beautiful buildings in France back in the spotlight (that’s obvious).
It was especially quickly spotted on twitter.
Twitter tease
If the news site quickly gave the right shot, the blunder was still the subject of many shares, boosting the teasing spirit of twitter users.
The Capitole de Toulouse, older
As a reminder, the United States Capitol is the building that serves as the seat of Congress, the legislative branch of the United States.
Its construction began in 1793 and ended in 1812. It consists of a dome and two wings. The north wing is the seat of the Senate and the south wing is that of the House of Representatives.
It is therefore the Capitole de Toulouse which is the older of the two and this is quite normal, Toulouse having more than 2000 years of history.
The game of comparisons
In Toulouse, the Capitouls sat there from the 13the century but for a long time, the site of local power was only an aggregation of disparate constructions. It was only from the XVIe century that the keep that we still know was erected.
The facade CNews chose to illustrate the Washington Capitol was made between 1750 and 1760.
It is therefore also older than the Capitol in Washington.
A subway for the Washington Capitol
In surface area, the latter is much larger than the Capitol in Toulouse. It is also so large that a light rail metro network has been put into service to link the Capitol, the Senate buildings and the House of Representatives. It has three lines and six stations …
With only one metro station nearby, our Capitol does not play in the same courtyard.
