On Wednesday (21/2) the debate on the new bill began in the Parliament Criminal Code. On principle in the competent Committee, New Democracy was in favor.

At the same time that the bill is in the Parliament, the Athens Bar Association decided on the universal abstention of lawyers from the courts on Thursday – the day the bill was passed.

Requesting the strengthening of Justice, its faster awarding and at the same time dealing with the feeling of impunity. The provisions of the draft law concern not only the tightening of penalties, but also the imposition of penalties. At the same time, the bill also contains regulations on domestic violence.

As the Minister of Justice announced yesterday, improvements and amendments requested by both opposition parties and institutions are to be incorporated. The most important change, which was announced by Mr. Floridis, has to do with the Bar Association’s request for a specific change in an article that provided for those convicted even of a misdemeanor to be sent to prison without suspension of their sentence. With the new amendment it is left to the discretion of the court.

It is noted that almost the entire opposition voted against it.
