The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum: A Museum in Constant Transformation

Bilbao

The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum is a museum in constant transformation. In fact, for months they have been working on an expansion that will make this museum an imposing place thanks to its architects: Norman Foster and Luis Mari Uriarte. Over time this place, full of art, has remained open, has not closed its doors. For this reason, the ‘Hoy por Hoy Bilbao-Bizkaia’ program has moved to the art gallery to discover the new micro-exhibitions, but also to tell how progress is being made in the remodeling.

The director of the museum, Miguel Zugaza, has been one of our hosts. Zugaza explained that they have a “very interesting” feeling. “We spend hours thinking about the future and helping with the works that are being carried out, at the same time we open the museum daily to all types of visitors we receive,” said the director.

The year 2025 will provide us with one of the most special museums in the State. In fact, an investment of 45 million euros has been made in culture. Throughout these months, the museum has remained open, in fact its main theme has been “open for works.” The works rotate weekly within a project called BBKateak; an exhibition proposal that aims to offer new narratives to the collection while the execution of the expansion project lasts. Throughout 21 rooms you can see works by artists such as Arellano, Millares, Mogrobejo, the Zubiaurre brothers or De la Cruz.

The guest work

Throughout the program, we have also been accompanied by the conservator of Modern and Contemporary art, Miriam Alzuri, and the Research and Conservation coordinator, Javier Novo. Together with Novo we have toured part of the exhibition of ‘The Invited Work’. “We present and celebrate the Sorolla year, it is the centenary of the painter’s death. It has allowed us to bring the figure of Joaquin Sorolla closer to the general public. He is an artist who little knows that Sorolla is almost Basque by adoption,” he explains

Educational programming

In addition, we have talked about how the Department of Education and Public Activities has educational programs and activities that include a podcast program, meetings with artists, even the art of rethinking the collection from other points of view.

Radio Bilbao and its 90 years

The director of the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao did not want to pass up the opportunity to congratulate Radio Bilbao on its 90 years.
