“The big ones have to help the little ones”

The ex-Bayern boss advocates solidarity within the Bundesliga. Leverkusen’s sports director Völler also speaks – and talks about how to proceed.

Ex-Bavaria President Uli Hoeneß called in the “Sport1 double pass” the Bundesliga community to solidarity with each other during the coronavirus crisis. “The big ones have to help the little ones,” said the 68-year-old. “It is a unique opportunity to show solidarity. It is a great opportunity for the Bundesliga and all of Europe.”

“There has never been a situation like this”

Hoeneß also called the public to prudence: “There has never been a situation like this. We now have to slow down and wait for the numbers of infected people to decrease.”

The long-time maker of the record champion received approval from Bayer Leverkusen’s sports director Rudi Völler, who was switched to the program via video transmission. “We are the most important sport and serve as a role model for society and young people. We have to show people how to behave correctly and that you don’t go out but stay at home.”

“It could continue with ghost games after the break”

The future Bundesliga game operations now have priority. “The most important thing for football is the national league,” said the 59-year-old. “The rest, the Champions League and the Europa League, are behind. The European Championship is at the very back.”

On Monday morning, Völler will personally attend the DFL summit in Frankfurt to deal with the crisis and how to proceed. Völler questioned whether the Bundesliga would take place again at the beginning of April: “I can hardly imagine that it will be played again. It could then continue with ghost games.”
