The barbecue habits of the Flemish: “More than 1 in 3 Belgians opt for more vegetables” | To eat

The Fleming is a big fan of the barbecue in the summer. No less than one third (32%) indicate that they barbecue even more often than in previous years. It is striking that people increasingly opt for more vegetables on the barbecue (36%). Vegetarian alternatives have not yet caught on: Only 12% of Flemish people have started working with more meat substitutes on the grill in recent years.

Besides more vegetables on the barbecue, we see that Flemish people like a healthier diet during the summer. 31% claim to eat healthier, compared to the winter months. 31% of Flemish people prefer meals with fewer calories during the summer. Finally, in summer people prefer a freshly cooked meal more often than in winter (39%).

Furthermore, 41% opt for more aperitif snacks than in winter, and this mainly in the company of others: almost one third (29%) eat more often with company compared to winter.

Spending time in the open air while eating is clearly preferred by six out of ten Flemish (62%) in the summer. The clock is also a factor: 41% consciously choose to spend less time in the kitchen. This is also reflected in the menu choice: compared to winter, the Flemish eat cold dishes much more often (60%). Salads in particular have the upper hand, because 67% invariably opt for more salads in the summer.
