The Corona pandemic caused a historic event to hold the summit match between Zamalek and Al-Ahly for the first time between the two poles in the Egyptian Premier League during the month of August, as the white hosts their red rival tomorrow, Saturday, August 22 at nine o’clock in the evening at Cairo Stadium in the 21st round of the Egyptian League.
The Egyptian League competition was suspended for five months, specifically during the period from March 11 to August 6, to impose this exceptional case on Al-Ahly and Zamalek to play the 120th summit match between them in the Egyptian League this August, which used to be a preparatory period in order to prepare for the new season.
Although the summit was held in the league for the first time in August, this month witnessed five previous confrontations that brought the two poles together, but in other local competitions, amid the superiority of the red genie as follows:
The first confrontation:
Al-Ahly and Zamalek have waited 68 years since the first derby between them in 1917 to play the first match in August, which was held on 4-8-1985 in the quarter-finals of the Egypt Cup.
Al-Ahly defeated Zamalek (3-2) in a match that extended to overtime. Hamada Marzouq, Mohamed El-Sayed and Tariq Khalil scored for Al-Ahmar, while Farouk Jaafar and Emmanuel Kawarshi scored the Al-Abyad double.
The second confrontation:
The second meeting that brought Al-Ahly and Zamalek together in August, specifically on 8-8-1986, was friendly and ended with a negative tie.
The third confrontation:
The third confrontation between Al-Ahly and Zamalek was on August 6, 1991, in the Egyptian Cup semi-final.
Al-Ahly beat Zamalek at the time (2-0) with a double signed by Mohamed Ramadan, to qualify for the final match and win the title against Aswan with a clean goal scored by the same player.
The fourth confrontation:
The fourth match came in the Egyptian Super Cup in 2003 on August 28, and Al-Ahly was crowned champion of the competition with a penalty shootout (3-1) after the match ended with a goalless draw.
Yasser Radwan, Wael Riad and Sebastian Gilberto scored for Al-Ahly in penalty kicks, while Zamalek scored a single kick through Sameh Youssef.
Fifth confrontation:
The last confrontation between Al-Ahly and Zamalek was in August four years ago, specifically on August 8, 2016, with the Egyptian Cup Final.
Zamalek was crowned champion of the Egypt Cup after defeating Al-Ahly with a score (3-1) in the match that was held between them at the Burj Al Arab stadium in Alexandria.
For Zamalek, Bassem Morsi scored two goals and Mustafa Fathi, while Abdullah Al-Saeed scored Al-Ahly’s only goal.
