The arts of Islam at the Ceramics Museum

Until March 27, 2022, the Ceramics Museum is hosting the exhibition “Islamic Arts, a past for a present”. An event as much by the quality of the works unveiled as by the original device in which it is part.

Indeed, Rouen is part of a unique national project co-produced by the Louvre Museum and the Réunion des Musées Nationaux – Grand Palais, which aims to open 18 exhibitions simultaneously in 18 French cities.

On the 2nd floor of the museum, in subdued light and a deep blue green setting, 10 masterpieces reveal the finesse, elegance, delicacy and beauty of the arts of Islam, among which, an Indian powder horn in jade, gold and precious stones, a decorative panel with a flute player from an Isfahan palace and a Moroccan ceremonial caftan ….

“All of these works are both historical and contemporary, from the Louvre and from Rouen collections that embody the richness of Islamic cultures,” comments Marie-Lise Lahaye, curator of decorative arts at the Réunion des Musées Métropolitains. We have chosen them to show the diversity of techniques, materials and shapes. You should also know that the Villon library has one of the largest collections of Islamic manuscripts in France. ”

The exhibition, which is widely relayed on social networks, attracts a young audience who take advantage of their visit to also discover the invaluable earthenware heritage of the museum.
