The art from the Y-block is detached from the wall – VG

The works of art “Fiskerne” and “Måken” by Pablo Picasso and Carl Nesjar have now been detached from the rest of the Y-block in the government quarter in Oslo and are ready for relocation.

The crew that will remove the art, rigged themselves until Monday morning with powerful machines and a separate special vehicle to transport away the heavy concrete wall.

Statsbygg has built steel structures around both works of art to make it possible to move them. With them, the “Fishermen”, which is part of the facade of the building and faces the street, weighs 250 tons. The “seagull”, which is sandblasted into the wall in the foyer, weighs “only” 60 tons.

The works of art will now be jacked down on a craft and rolled out of the construction site. They will be stored nearby and then integrated into the new government quarter.

– They must be at Akersgata. We will not move them very far, communications director Hege Njaa Aschim in Statsbygg told NTB this weekend.

To be removed during the week

The plan is that the work of removing the works of art will be completed during the week. Statsbygg writes on its website that “Måken” will be transported to the storage site on Tuesday 28 July – starting around 10 am. 12.

– It’s a slow operation. The work will take place over several days, and the actual transport takes place at a speed of less than 1 km / h, says communications manager Pål Weiby in Statsbygg in the press release from there.

The decision on demolition has provoked strong reactions in several quarters, but has been maintained for six years despite appeals and judicial review of its validity.
