The Argentine actor Mauricio Dayub will turn his family’s stories into ‘El equilibrista’

The success of the recent Argentine theater in Buenos Aires, ‘El equilibrista’, starring actor Mauricio Dayub, premieres in Spain at Teatros del Canal from May 4 to 8, in a play in which the protagonist will cover stories from his family .

He will do it through a group of characters that form a kind of genealogical portrait of his own past, and for which the actor received the Golden Ace in Argentina for best performer in Buenos Aires and the Golden Star of the Sea in Mar del Silver. In addition, the work won the Konex award for the best one-person show in 2021, according to a statement from Teatros del Canal.

The show quickly became known in Argentina “for its quality, for the strong identification of the public with its personal history and for the moving way in which it is done, recovering the purest essence of theater.”

Also, because of the strategy used for the first time in Argentina: the actor promotes that, at the end of the show, he waits in the lobby. If any spectator did not like the show, he returns the money for the tickets.

“My grandfather used to say that ‘the world was one of those who dared to lose their balance'”, Dayub explained about the origin of this show, which speaks “of youth, of the finitude of life, of family ties and of what blood bequeaths to us. But fundamentally, of the impetus with which we must live the present”.

Directed by César Brie, the Argentine actor reviews his family stories on stage, playing characters like his grandfather or grandmother, who emigrated from Italy to Argentina, or himself when he embraced the acting profession as a young man.

“The show could be called The Enchanter, The Illusionist, or The Heart of the Dayub Child. It is a dream way of sharing my story, delighting, exciting, entertaining,” said Dayub.

Born in 1960, Mauricio Dayub began to work regularly in film and television acting in the mid-1980s. From 1997 is his first great theatrical success, ‘El amateur’, written by himself, and in 2011 he starred in another of his celebrated theatrical roles in ‘Toc Toc’. Both kept them for several seasons on the Argentine scene until ‘El equilibrista’.
