The Arena Temple, a place to visit in Villa Corona, Jalisco

This attraction is officially called the Temple of the Virgin of Lourdes and took 50 years to be completed.

Mexico City, April 7 (However).- The only Sand Temple in the world is located in Villa Corona, a municipality located in the central region of Jalisco. This architectural wonder was built practically by hand 85 years ago as a family project by Mr. Jesús Navarro Godoy and his children.

Villa Corona is known for housing three of the most important spas in Jalisco and for being home to this attraction, which is officially called the Temple of the Virgin of Lourdes. On a hill made of soft jal beneath a hill in the municipality, where using their hands as the main tool, and with the help of shovels and pickaxes, the Godoy family achieved their goal.

The members of the family created a kind of cave system, where the temple in honor of the Virgin of Lourdes, and several rooms, are currently located. At the time, this construction caused so much commotion that even the then President of Mexico, General Lázaro Cárdenas, traveled to Villa to see the now famous construction and give his consent. Despite the approval of the federal government, it took 50 years for the work that Don Jesús Navarro and his children began to be completed.

Currently, the descendants of Mr. Jesús Navarro, especially his grandchildren, are in charge of giving maintenance and life to the place. Although entering the chapel is safe, care must be taken as the tunnels are home to bats.

This tourist treasure is located at 257 Manuel M. Dieguez Street, in the El Verde neighborhood. Opening hours for all visitors are Monday to Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., while on Sundays it is open from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. It is closed on Saturdays. The cost to access the Sand Temple is voluntary cooperation.
