The “ANIMA” choir honors Libyan heritage with a captivating wedding song performance.

The Libyan folk song “Pūgõ, pūgõ, jengõ, jengõ” or “Pūt, pūt, els, els” was arranged for the Saulkrasti choir “ANIMA” and percussion instruments by the choir’s artistic director, conductor Laura Leontyeva, and the story was put into a stage dance by the young choreographer Rudolfs Cīrulis.

Laura says: “This Libyan folk song has been very dear to me because of its vital energy and power, but in our interpretation we especially emphasize the rhythm and the pulsating feeling, which is enhanced by the sound of the language. This is not our first contact with the Libyan language, because in 2018, together with the composer Ugis Prauliņa, we released a music album dedicated to Libyan culture “JÜRD.SAKNES.ROOTS”. There is something indescribably magical about love.”

The animated video of the song symbolically reproduces a particularly cherished star in the big universe – the Libyan green, white and blue, or forest, sand and sea. However, the very content of the song tells about the wedding ritual through the stage dance.

Saulkrasti choir “ANIMA” and percussionist Miķelis Vīte can be heard in the song, recorded in “Lauska” studio, sound director Kaspars Bārbals.

The story of the Libyan folk song is danced by the dance ensemble “AUSTRIS” (artistic director Elita Treilone).
