The 5 essential natural corners in A Coruña – The GO!

The province of A Coruña has many charming corners to discover, there is no doubt about that! Cliffs, beaches, forests or its historical heritage deserve to be discovered. But today we select the 5 essential natural corners for you.

Fragas do Eume

We enter the course of the Eume River to discover one of the most beautiful corners in the province of A Coruña. Virtually unspoiled, this is one of the best-preserved Atlantic riparian forests in Europe. Here an abundant vegetation awaits us full of oaks, poplars, ash trees, hazelnuts, maples, and more than 20 species of ferns and wild fruit trees between fountains and waterfalls. Be sure to visit the A Carboeira viewpoint in Monfero.

Sarela river promenade

Completely oblivious to the city of Santiago de Compostela but a few meters away from the cathedral, we enter the enchanting forest parallel to the small river Sarela that allows us to verify the historical importance that river channels have had in Galicia: bridges, ditches, canals , mills, tanning factories … The latter played a very important role in the economic development of the city.

The walk ends in Carme de Abaixo, today an area rehabilitated as a housing estate. But first, we will go through a very pleasant walk full of oaks and the typical vegetation of the Galician banks: birches, alders, willows, etc.

Ría de O Burgo

Among all the wetlands in Galicia, the O Burgo estuary is considered one of the most important natural corners for its biodiversity. There are species of birds that come from Norway to spend the winter. Here in O Burgo there are enough resources for them to live all winter and also without cold. In this area, there are, above all, waders that feed on everything they see in muddy areas.

Dunes of Corrubedo

Preserving the environment from environmental alterations in its four microclimates – mountains, marshes, dunes and beaches – led to the declaration of this natural space in A Coruña as a protected area for 29 years. After this declaration of protected space, part of the network of natural parks of the Xunta de Galicia joined. It has also been classified as a wetland of international importance, and is included in the Natura 2000 Network. Since 2006 access to the dunes has been prohibited to prevent them from losing height.

We had already selected this natural corner within the best beaches in the province of A Coruña but we couldn’t stop naming it.

Tambre River

This river begins in the avenue of the beautiful Coruña town of Noia and leads us to the Tambre Hydroelectric Plant, the work of Antonio Palacios, the architect of such well-known projects as the Palacio de Comunicaciones in Madrid.
On the way to Lousame we come across some striking sites such as the Toxosoutos monastery, the hydroelectric power station or the well-known Pazo de Tambre. We will also see one of the most beautiful bridges in Galicia: the Pontenafonso, which connects Outes with Noia where there is an estuary.
