The sailing America’s Cup will pass through… Spain. In September and October 2024, Barcelona will host the sailing competition, organizers announced on Tuesday, March 29. The decision to organize the next edition in Spain marks a new break with the tradition of the competition which wants the next edition to take place in the country of the defending champion, which is currently New Zealand. The Swiss from Alinghi and the Americans from Oracle had already organized the event respectively in Spain in Valencia in 2007 and 2011, and in Bermuda in 2017.

“Barcelona is truly one of the most recognized cities in the world, so having the opportunity to host the most recognized sailing event in the world is hugely exciting,” explained Grant Dalton, the boss of the America’s Cup. During the last edition, in March 2021, it was the New Zealand team that won.
By hosting the Cup the America, Barcelona thus becomes the first site in the world to host both the Olympic Games and an America’s Cup.
