Emma Raducanu creates the sensation at the US Open in New York. The 18-year-old British woman prevails in the final of the two teenagers against Leylah Fernandez from Canada, who is two months older, 6: 4, 6: 3.
After 1:51 hours, Raducanu used her third match point with an ace and caused one of the biggest sensations in tennis history. Started as number 150 in the ranking, she stayed without losing a set throughout the tournament. In the first round she had defeated Stefanie Vögele, in the quarterfinals Belinda Bencic.
Raducanu is the first ever female qualifier to win a Grand Slam tournament, and also the first to do so when she has only entered one for the second time. At Wimbledon, she reached the round of 16 after only making her debut on the WTA tour in Nottingham in June.
Raducanu is the first British woman since Virginia Wade to win a Grand Slam tournament. The 1977 Wimbledon winner Wade was also among the 24,000 spectators in the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
