The 10 Most Questionable Pokémon Designs: Ranking from the Ugliest to the Most Controversial

Nobody doubts the greatness of ‘Pokémon’. Pocket monsters have given some of the best moments to the audience. With so many years, it seems that designers have run out of ideas, giving rise to creatures not as cute as Pikachu.

For 25 years, the world of pocket monsters has shown very peculiar creatures. From Mewtwo, the cloned Pokémon that is one of the most powerful in the anime, the cute Pikachu, the official Pokémon mascot, to the rarest being that Ash has ever captured and is more valuable than a legendary, the designs of the trainers’ companions have been liked by fans. Well, almost all of them.

There are currently more than a thousand Pokémon, and while some are very pretty, others are really ugly. Generally, Pokémon are the combination of two or more animals, either extinct or still present in nature, however, it seems that little by little designers have run out of ideas for new creatures. These are 10 of the most questionable Pokémon designs according to anime fans, and while some are new, others came out in the first generation.

Trubbish

Screen Rant

Many Pokémon were inspired by inanimate objects, which can sometimes be a clever idea. However, some can take an idea too far, as is the case with Trubbish. The Pokémon is designed to literally look like a garbage bag.

Exeggcute

Screen Rant

The egg Pokémon is anything but cute. In reality, it is a group of six eggs with drawn faces that stay together forming a swarm at all times. The broken egg on the back is the worst thing about this design, since in theory, an egg like that would be dead.

voltorb

Screen Rant

Voltorb’s design is simply boring, appearing to be a basic sphere that looks like a Pokéball without the button. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with Voltorb but there’s nothing very memorable or interesting except that it can explode.

Jynx

Screen Rant

Jynx is the most controversial Pokémon in all of anime, thanks to its original design that had black skin, referencing racist caricatures. The Ice Type Pokémon has a very creepy appearance of a humanoid woman with long blonde hair.

Mr. Mime

Screen Rant

Another humanoid Pokémon is Mr. Mime, who, like Jynx, is a bit scary being the fusion of clown and mime. Their facial expressions and psychic actions combine to be the source of a nightmare. It’s amazing how a Pokémon trainer can keep it under his control.

Unown

Screen Rant

Unown is a unique species of Pokémon that has 28 different shapes, representing each letter of the alphabet, as well as an exclamation point and a question mark. A boring pocket monster design that takes up space in Pokémon libraries.

Lickilicky

Screen Rant

Both Lickilicky and Lickitung’s forms of evolution are a bit disturbing. According to the Pokédex, the tongues of both Lickilicky and Lickitung are as dexterous as a human hand. Their saliva has a numbing agent and an acidic factor to paralyze and decompose anything or anyone. Worst? Its tongue can extend up to 82 feet long.

Solosis

Screen Rant

The design of Solosis is supposed to be that of a very large cell. The body is encapsulated in a liquid substance that will leak if hit. Additionally, he communicates telepathically. As it evolves, it apparently goes through a process of mitosis.

Musharna

Screen Rant

The Pokédex says that Musharna is designed to look like a tapir with a “dream mist” coming out of its head. Curled into a fetal position, the pink swirl coming from the top of his head hints at some sort of umbilical cord.

Klefki

Screen Rant

Klefki is perhaps one of the worst Pokémon designs. Klefki’s form never made sense since this monster is literally just a set of keys that sneaks into humans’ houses to eat their keys. Fortunately, it offers some nice moves in battle, but it’s a very baffling design idea.
