The market share of cars with automatic transmissions has increased significantly in recent years. In 2020, almost half of newly registered Belgian cars were equipped with an automatic gearbox. By way of comparison: ten years ago, only 12 percent of new cars in our country had an automatic transmission.

Where did the success come from?

The success of automatic transmission in Belgium has several causes. Ease of driving is certainly one of them. While automatic driving was something “for the elderly” for a long time, the increasing traffic jams have also made younger drivers aware of more relaxed driving with an automatic transmission. Traffic jam means standing still, and therefore it is very convenient not to have to change every time.

There is a second reason. While you used to consume more with an automatic gearbox than when driving a manual gearbox, this difference has been completely eliminated thanks to the advance of technology. On the contrary: it is now often cheaper to drive automatically. This is because the car itself calculates when to shift gears. This way you always drive at the right speed.

Furthermore, the switch to electric cars also contributes to the success of the automatic transmission, because more and more models are only available with automatic or robotized transmission.

Are you going to drive electric? This is why your auto insurance is likely to get cheaper.

What is the effect on your premium?

Self-driving may be easy, but it affects your insurance premium. If you drive with an automatic gearbox, you always pay a slightly higher insurance premium.

This has mostly to do with the purchase price of the car. On average, a car with an automatic gearbox costs 1,500 to 2,000 euros more than the manual version. In addition, the possible repair costs are always higher than with a manual gearbox. This is of course reflected in the award.

Concrete example

Here is the difference in the annual premium for a manual gearbox (petrol, full omnium), in euros:
