Ronald Koeman thanked Julian Nagelsmann for the support. Before the Monday night game (today) against Huesca in the Primera Division said the Dutch coach of FC Barcelona regarding the respectful statements of his German colleague about his work in Catalonia: “It was a very good reaction.”
In the past few days, rumors had surfaced that the newly elected Barca President Joan Laporta would like the RB Leipzig coach to succeed Koeman in the long term. Nagelsmann then replied: “He (Koeman, editor’s note) is a good coach, with success and with a contract.” The 33-year-old also said: “That is not very relevant to me. To talk about these clubs would be disrespectful from my perspective to the very good coaches who are in office there. “
Nagelsmann is friends with Koeman’s assistant coach
Nagelsmann was recently traded as the new Bayern coach, should Hansi Flick take over the job of national coach. What is interesting about the Spanish rumor is the fact that Koeman’s assistant is Nagelsmann’s former assistant trainer at TSG Hoffenheim, Alfred Schreuder. When asked about this on Sunday after the 1-1 draw against Frankfurt, Nagelsmann said: “I keep in touch with Alfred, but we only talk about private issues because we are good friends.”
Koeman himself did not go into the speculation that he should be inherited by the coach of the German table runner-up. “I don’t have to answer the names of players or coaches produced by a journalist,” he said. “It’s a media business. You have to fill the pages every day. I have a contract. We are improving a lot of things and we have to keep going.”
Contract until 2022
Koeman was installed as the new coach of the Spanish top club’s team in the summer and, among other things, had deported long-time striker Luis Suarez to front runner Atletico Madrid. He is also said to have a difficult relationship with top star Lionel Messi, whom he announced when he took office that he would want to curtail his privileges.
Koeman used to be a player in Barcelona himself (1989-1995). After initial difficulties, he stabilized the team and brought them within reach of the former league leaders Atletico. If Barca win against Huesca, the gap is only four points. The 57-year-old has a contract until 2022. (RBlive/hen)
