The presidents of the boards of the main listed Swiss companies received less remuneration on average in 2019 than in the previous year. Roche President Christoph Franz received the highest fee at around CHF 6.2 million.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors received an average of 2.45 million francs last year as a fee and bonus. The largest listed Swiss companies distributed an average of 4 percent less to the chairs of their top management and supervisory board than in 2019. This is shown by a data analysis by the AWP news agency.

You can see which members of the Board of Directors earn the most in Switzerland in the picture above.

Hardly any savings

5 out of 26 companies saved on the remuneration of the Chairman of the Board of Directors. The information from those companies from the Swiss Leader Index (SLI) that have already published their annual report was analyzed by the AWP. In addition to the fixed fee, any bonuses were also taken into account, although their share is usually rather small in contrast to the CEO wages. The Novartis spin-off Alcon, whose Chairman of the Board of Directors Michael Ball received CHF 950,000, was newly included for 2019.

Top earner Christoph Franz von Roche received only slightly less in 2019 than in the previous year. Part of this remuneration – specifically one million francs – is, however, shares with a vesting period of ten years. In the interests of better comparability, the value of these shares, unlike that reported by Roche, was taken into account with their total market value at the end of 2019.

Against the trend

UBS’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Axel A. Weber, suffered the biggest drop in fees compared to the previous year. His remuneration in 2019 was just over CHF 5.2 million, CHF 800,000 less than in 2018. The Board of Directors also saved at Swatch and Nestlé.

The Chairman of the Board of Kuehne + Nagel, on the other hand, grew strongly against the trend. Jörg Wolle’s fee was over CHF 1.8 million, CHF 550,000 more than in the previous year. Other directors earn slightly more. In contrast to the presidents, the other members of the board of directors received on average a slightly higher fee than in the previous year. On average, this was around CHF 360,000, 1 percent higher than in 2018. The best paid for the Board of Directors of the Partners Group with an average remuneration of CHF 774,000 per member (excluding the remuneration of the President).
