Thanks to the revision of the law: Fewer twins and the like after in vitro treatments | Switzerland

SWITZERLAND [NEWS SERVICE] ⋅ In 2019, 2204 children were born after in vitro treatment. The number of multiple births has fallen sharply. This is good news because such births are often associated with complications.

(of) The new Reproductive Medicine Act has been in force since 2017. Medical practice has also changed since then. It is becoming increasingly rare that several embryos are inserted into the uterus at the same time. This leads to a significant decrease in multiple births after in vitro treatments, as new figures that the Federal Statistical Office published on Monday show.

While it was 16 percent of births in 2016, this proportion fell to six percent in 2019. The development is good news for the health of newborns: complications are more common in multiple births during pregnancy and childbirth.

According to the FSO, around 6,000 couples tried to have a child using medically assisted procreation in 2019. This resulted in 2080 births.
