Thailand Fisherman Catches Giant Catfish in Fishing Competition: A Rare and Endangered Species

Jakarta

The expression on the face of a fisherman in Thailand is immediately happy when he sees his catch. How could a giant catfish not have been obtained.

The angler in question is named Somchai Boontong. So the story goes that he joined a fishing competition to raise funds.

The competition was held last August 21 at a lake in Udon Thani Province. During the strike, Somchai felt a heavy pull.

He didn’t expect a huge creature to take the bait. After trying hard finally the fish was pulled to the surface.

When it was picked up, everyone was shaking in disbelief. Somchai got the giant catfish mekoong.

When measured its length is almost two meters. While it weighs up to 299 kilograms, its size is as heavy as a sacrificial cow.

Fish traders then scramble to buy the fish because the price of the meat is around 100 THB (Rp. 43 thousand) per kilogram. However, Somchai decided to sell it to a fundraising team who bought the giant fish for 20,000 THB (Rp. 8.7 million) and released it back into its natural habitat.

The local fisheries service helped transport the catfish to a pond at the Wat Nong Ruea Klon temple. Staff monitored him for an hour to make sure he was adjusting to his new environment.
