Tesla launches autopilot subscription. For some cars, this means expensive service

The trend among software companies has long been a subscription system, where programs are constantly updated and no final version can be purchased. Tesla is also running on a similar system. For the time being, it has started offering a monthly subscription to autonomous driving in the Full Self Driving (FSD) package in the USA for $ 199 (approximately 4,333 crowns). The server informed about it The Verge.

Owners of Tesla electric cars who have purchased the already canceled Enhanced Autopilot package can receive a subscription at a discounted price of $ 99 per month, according to the company’s website. Tesla has so far sold the Full Self Driving package for a one-time fee of $ 10,000 (approximately CZK 217,000).

However, a monthly subscription allows Tesla owners to try driving without a long-term commitment. Depending on the conditions on Tesla’s website, drivers can cancel their subscription at any time.

However, the Full Self Driving subscription is intended only for Tesla car owners who have computer hardware FSD 3.0 or higher and a basic or advanced autopilot configuration. Others can purchase hardware upgrades for $ 1,500 to prepare their cars for Full Self Driving. Drivers who bought an electric car between 2016 and 2019 will need it.

Tesla owners, who will have to pay extra, are outraged on the social networks Twitter and Reddit. Some say Tesla should pay them for software upgrades, while others have called for a class action lawsuit.

Tesla boss Elon Musk has been promising a subscription for several years. However, it was not until the beginning of July this year that Tesla began sending out software updates for the beta version of 9 Full Self Driving.

Tesla says in its announcement that the Full Self Driving subscription includes features such as autopilot navigation, automatic lane change, automatic parking or response to traffic lights or stop signs. Currently enabled functions require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle completely autonomous.

The carmaker warns that the software does not allow the vehicle to drive safely without driver assistance. In the case of Tesla, there have already been several accidents where the car was driven by an autopilot and the man behind the wheel did not pay attention to the traffic and the road.

According to Market Watch, Tesla’s shares fell by two percent last week and have fallen by almost nine percent since the beginning of the year. In the last 12 months, however, their growth has been 115 percent.
