Tensions between India and Canada escalate: Visa processing center suspends operations

India’s visa processing center for Canada has suspended operations following tensions between the two countries after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said India may be involved in the killing of a Canadian citizen.

Canada’s prime minister has made “credible allegations” of India’s involvement in the killing of Sikh independence activist Hardeep Singh Nijhar, who was gunned down outside a temple in India in June.

As a result, the Indian Visa Application Center in Canada has announced that the issuance of visas will be suspended from September 21.

Canada’s diplomatic mission in India said all its consulates in India are open and functioning, but the safety of diplomats is being assessed after some of them received threats on social media.

India’s foreign ministry has issued new travel advisories, warning Indian nationals traveling to Canada to be cautious due to “increasing anti-Indian activity and politically motivated hate crimes”.

Despite the tension, Canada remains an attractive destination for Indian tourists and students, BTA reported.
