Tens of thousands without electricity in winter-cold Scotland and northern England

Parts of Scotland and the north of England are still without power after storm Arwen caused more than 1,100 power outages. Tens of thousands of people are affected.

The road had to be cleared of snow at Buttertubs Pass in North Yorkshire in northern England on Sunday. Many people are still without electricity in the winter cold.

– The storm was well warned. Despite good preparations, Arwen resulted in injuries on a scale and intensity that has not been seen in 15 years, says Rod Gardner from the company Northern Powergrid.

The company states that they are trying to restore the electricity connection for 40,000 customers, while SP Energy Networks says 21,000 customers were still without electricity on Sunday.

The storm hit Britain on Friday. It weakened on Saturday, but the British weather service Met Office warned of continued rain, sleet and snow.

Sunday was the coldest day in the UK so far this winter. Snow has fallen over large parts of Scotland and northern England, and temperatures have dropped to minus 10 degrees. Some train routes, including the route between Edinburgh and Newcastle, have been canceled due to damage caused by the storm.

Three people have lost their lives due to trees that have been blown over by the storm.
