Swiss tennis player who won 20 Grand Slams, Roger Federer, announced that he will donate US$500,000 to children in Ukraine who have been affecteds with the war.

The funds will be given to War Child Holland through its foundation and will focus on guaranteeing care and access to education.

The former number one in the world stressed that about six million Ukrainian children are not studying as a result of the Russian invasion, so they hope to contribute a grain of sand in this situation.

“My family and I are horrified to see the images from Ukraine and heartbroken for the innocent people who have been so terribly affected. We are for peace,” added Federer on his Twitter.

For now, reports from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) record that almost three million refugees have fled from Ukraine, which would represent 7% of the population of the European country.

“We know that this is a very critical time to provide them with access to education and we would like to support them in coping with this extremely traumatic experience,” said the tennis player.

Other athletes have also joined the cause, for example fellow tennis player Andy Murray noted that he will donate part of his 2022 tournament earnings to children.

For its part, the UN World Food Program has focused on guaranteeing food for war victims.

The goal is to help more than 3 million Ukrainians with food donations. Since February 24, several of the Ukrainians have moved to Poland to take refuge from Russian attacks.
