The world number one Novak Djokovic, who is still covered by his Covid-19 vaccination status, will not take part in the ATP Cup (January 1 to 9 in Sydney), according to media reports. This means that his start at the Australian Open in Melbourne, which was already considered fixed, is apparently called into question again.

The Serbian newspaper “Blic” reported on Saturday that Djokovic had decided, according to a “close source”, to skip the ATP Cup. The 34-year-old is currently still in Belgrade, where he looks after his foundation, trains and spends time with the family.
The ATP Cup is the start of the new season, the Australian Open will be on the program from January 17th. Djokovic has won it nine times, most recently three times in a row. With another success he would celebrate his 21st major title and become the sole record holder.
Guesswork continues
It now seems unclear whether the 34-year-old will be in Melbourne at all. Two weeks ago the organizers of the first major of the year had confirmed his participation. Australian Open boss Craig Tiley said on Wednesday that he was not sure whether Djokovic would compete in Melbourne Park. According to “Blic”, the Serb could in any case announce his final decision before the end of the year.
Australian media have speculated that Djokovic could apply for a waiver. Because only fully vaccinated players are allowed to take part in the tournament, this also applies to the support team and other companions. Tennis Australia had previously confirmed that every athlete must meet the strict requirements of the health authorities. “This includes a certified vaccination certificate or a valid medical exemption that has been approved by the Australian health authorities,” said the umbrella organization, according to local media.
“Medical exceptions no loophole”
Deputy Prime Minister James Merlino said there were only a limited number of reasons for a waiver. “Everyone is looking forward to the Australian Open, and everyone who will be attending – spectators, players, officials, staff – is expected to be fully vaccinated. These are the rules. Medical exceptions are just that – it’s not a loophole for privileged tennis players, ”Merlino explained, according to ABC. “It is a medical exception under exceptional circumstances when you have an acute illness.”
