Leonie Küng has unlocked her counter. The 19-year-old Schaffhousoise, ranked 283rd in the world, spent the first round in Hua Hin in Thailand. She beat local Patcharin Cheapchandej (25, WTA 731) in straight sets (6-0 6-3) and 51 minutes of play.
This is the first time that the 2018 Wimbledon Junior Tournament finalist has won the WTA circuit. Her only main draw match so far was an entry loss to Gstaad in 2018 against Sweden’s Johanna Larssen (6-4 6-1).
After qualifying, Küng continues the adventure in the south of Bangkok. In the second round, she will face Hua Hin, the winner of the match between Chinese Lin Zhu (WTA 70) and Russian Varvara Flink (WTA 135). The native of Beringen is enjoying herself in Thailand where she has played two ITF tournaments in Nonthaburi since the end of January. Küng was eliminated there in the quarterfinals and then in the half.
