Telenet analysis: Belgians made fewer mobile phone calls in 2021 – IT Pro – News

An analysis by Telenet shows that mobile calling will once again make way for messages via social media for Telenet customers in 2021. Data traffic via a fixed internet connection increased as before the corona crisis and streaming claims about half of the annual network traffic.

Telenet compares in his analysis several times in the past year with 2020, the year in which the corona crisis surcharge and the Belgian telecom company saw a huge increase on its mobile and internet network. In 2020, there were 10 percent more calls per month via the mobile telephone line compared to 2019, but in 2021 there was again a downward trend. At that time, Telenet customers called 4 percent less on average compared to 2020. According to Telenet, the percentage is still 6 percent higher compared to 2019 and, according to the company’s estimates, will again reach the same level in 2024 as in 2019.

According to Telenet, the average internet consumption via a fixed internet network rose by 25 percent in 2021 to approximately 2500GB/s. That is on top of the 55 percent increase that already took place in 2020. Consumption in 2021 therefore continued to increase, but this time it is more in line with the evolutions of the past years, except for the trend break from 2020.

The shared graphs show that approximately 12 percent less was streamed in 2021, but that streaming still claims about half of the annual average internet volume at Telenet. That is in line with previous years. The share of game downloads increased by 78 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, and that share will remain almost the same in 2021. On December 7, gamers set a new record. It downstream internet traffic peaked on that day at 3.6 terabit per second and according to Telenet that was due to the latest Call of Duty update that was massively downloaded at the time. The company also mentions telecommuting in its analysis. In 2020, internet traffic used for telecommuting increased by about 65 percent. In 2021, another 21 percent was added.
