An application is increasingly used as a quick and convenient alternative to popular messenger apps like WhatsApp. We are talking about the Telegram app. However, there are always warnings from data protection experts about the weak points of the Telegram security. Your worst fears were realized recently when a new malfunction completely prevented files from being deleted.
Telegram app: Messenger determines files itself
One of the functions that fans of the Telegram app appreciate was the undoing of users of the messenger service for a while. The feature allows the user to automatically delete files after a certain period of time. You can use the Telegram function in “Secret Chat” mode. This is also end-to-end encrypted and thus offers special Telegram security for the messages. Unlike in normal chat mode, the content is automatically deleted from all devices on which you are logged in with your Telegram account after a period has expired. But not always.
According to a security analyst, this was exactly the function under macOS faulty. This is not even a bug, but a system error. Because the audio and video files of the secret chats would be in the same folder as those of the normal chats. This meant that they could still be accessed even though the Telegram app actually displayed them as deleted. Another tricky discovery by the data protection agency is no less problematic: the Telegram app stores the passcode in plain text.
Telegram gives the all-clear with an update
Both security holes should no longer exist. They were legacy from version 7.3. Telegram has already closed these security gaps with version 7.4. It is therefore advisable for you to check which version you are still using and to upgrade if necessary.
But it is not the first time that security experts have warned about the Telegram app. As another messenger besides WhatsApp, Signal is currently very popular.
