Technology / Telephony. TCL unveils a folding and rollable smartphone concept

TCL is not the most present brand in the smartphone segment, but the Chinese manufacturer is teeming with ideas in its laboratories. Earlier this year, he took advantage of CES 2021 to discuss a concept of a roll-up screen smartphone.

The aim of TCL was, like LG with its Rollable, to show its know-how in flexible screens. The brand returns in mid-April with a new concept of folding and rollable smartphone.

Rather than choosing between the two formats, the manufacturer confirmed the rumors during a conference dedicated to the presentation of three “classic” smartphones.

With the Fold ‘n Roll, TCL presents a hybrid device that can act as a smartphone, small tablet and large tablet at the same time.

It is in fact in the guise of a smartphone equipped with a 6.87-inch screen, which can unfold and even extend to offer two additional display sizes.

When unfolded, the Fold ‘n Roll offers an 8.85-inch and 10-inch display when you decide to roll out the screen.

With its concept, TCL achieves the performance – on paper – of bringing together in a single device what Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi or Oppo offers.

An all-in-one smartphone

Indeed, the fact of being able to unfold this smartphone is strongly reminiscent of Huawei’s Mate X. The Chinese giant’s first folding smartphone could indeed fold from the outside, with the risk of not protecting the screen.

Its successor opted for a screen that unfolds from the inside, like a book, like Samsung’s Fold series or the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold.

The roll-up system is reminiscent of the surprising Oppo X 2021 that we were able to try.

The characteristics of TCL’s three-in-one device are not known. Still in the draft stage, it simply allows TCL to unveil its ambitions before hoping to play a role in the folding and / or rollable smartphone market.
