Teardown shows that Apple has made components smaller in iPhone 12 mini – Tablets and Phones – Geeks

A teardown by iFixit of the iPhone 12 mini shows that in addition to a smaller battery, Apple has put a smaller speaker and vibrator motor in the phone than in the larger variants of the iPhone 12. The phone was recently released.

Reparatiesite iFixit writes that in addition to the smaller components, many parts have been redesigned for the smaller smartphone. For example, one of the connectors of the camera is considerably smaller, a screen connection has disappeared and the housing for the front camera and Face ID is more compact.

That the battery is smaller, was already known. The phone has a battery capacity of 2227mAh, approx half that of an average smartphone. In addition, the Taptic Engine, the name that Apple gives to its vibration motor, is considerably smaller than in the other iPhone 12 models. The larger iPhone 12s, in turn, have a smaller vibration motor than their predecessors. The speaker at the bottom is also smaller on the iPhone 12 mini.

In addition, there appeared to be some space left in the teardown of the larger iPhone 12. According to iFixit, a 3.5mm jack would have fitted at the bottom, while a piece of plastic was placed at the top where the Pro version has its third camera. The link between pcb and camera that have larger iPhone 12s, does not seem to have the mini version.

The repair site has opened up an American and European model of the small smartphone. There are some differences in this; for example, the American model has mmWave antennas in front super fast 5G on high frequencies with limited range. The pcb also has some other chips for processing those signals and there are four black dots between the front cameras, of which iFixit has no idea what they are for. Tweakers published one last week review of the iPhone 12 mini.
