Concerns about corona infections at UAE Emirates, the team of defending champion Tadej Pogacar are increasing. Team manager Joxean Fernández Matxín also had to leave the Tour de France due to a positive corona test.
“Now I am the one who has to say goodbye to the race that is the main goal of the year,” Fernández wrote on Thursday. Twitter† “Last night I tested positive for corona at the internal control of the team. I will continue to support the boys. The Tour continues.”
Pogacar has already lost two teammates with New Zealander George Bennett and Norwegian Vegard Stake Laengen due to a corona infection. The Pole Rafal Majka also tested positive, but he had no symptoms and appeared to have a low risk of infecting others.
On Wednesday, Pogacar lost the yellow leader’s jersey to Jonas Vingegaard due to a rare breakdown and a successful coup by Jumbo-Visma. The Slovenian is now third in the standings, 2 minutes and 22 seconds from the Dane.
The Tour peloton is currently working on the twelfth stage. It is about 165 kilometers from Briançon to Alpe d’Huez.
